Leading National Foundations and Health-Care Organizations Make Unprecedented Call for Investment in Prevention
Leaders of six of the nation’s top health foundations today announced an unprecedented joint call for prevention measures to be central to the reform of our national health systems. In an open letter released August 17, the leaders of The California Endowment, The Kresge Foundation, Nemours, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation and a top official at Kaiser Permanente, wrote that prevention measures like improved access to healthy food and physical activity will save both lives and money. Prevention Institute, Executive Director, Larry Cohen was featured in the September issue of The Nation’s Health discussing the opportunity to improve health and save money through a strategic investment in quality prevention. A recent analysis conducted in partnership with Prevention Institute, Trust for America’s Health, Urban Institute, New York Academy of Medicine, The California Endowment and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reported that a small strategic investment in disease prevention could result in significant savings in U.S. health care costs and reduction of chronic disease. In fact, an investment in quality prevention could save the country more than $16 billion in annual healthcare costs within five years. Cohen asserts that “we now are in a situation where we can’t afford not to do prevention.” Click to read full article.

Just published: The Encyclopedia of Interpersonal Violence
As part of our overall strategy to prevent family and interpersonal violence, Prevention Institute contributed to Claire Renzetti and Jeffery L. Edlesons' The Encyclopedia of Interpersonal Violence. This text, released in June 2008, is a research-supported encyclopedia that clarifies critical issues and educates the public about different forms of interpersonal violence, their incidence and prevalence, theoretical explanations, public policy initiatives, and prevention and intervention strategies. Our Good Health Counts report describes housing as an indicator of well-being. However, sixty six percent of Americans cited the economy as a major source of stress with housing costs being of particular concern.
